By Eamonn Byrne

Tinryland Juniors remained in contention for a semi final spot in the Carlow S.F.L. division 3 when they easily overcame Ballinabranna in Rathcrogue on Tuesday 5th June.

Tinryland must win their remaining 2 games at home to Naomh Eoin and Old Leighlin to guarantee their place in the knockout stages. With a sizeable number of players missing for various reasons the club had to call on a few of the minor panel to play in this important game and the young lads were among the more prominent players on the night with Diarmuid Walshe who scored 3 goals, Ciaran Townsend and Conor O’ Brien all answering the call in a big way.

Tinryland opened the scoring after 3 minutes when Garry Fields pointed and within 60 seconds Diarmuid Walshe  had bagged the first of his 3 goals after good interplay by the team. Ballinabranna were then awarded a penalty which they converted before Walshe and Fields extended the Tinryland lead to three points after 12 minutes. Ballinabranna then enjoyed their best spell scoring 2 unanswered points in the 13th and 14th minutes.

Tinryland however were doing well in many sectors with the defence led by an excellent Mark Dempsey hoovering up everything thrown at them and Patrick Townsend and Richard Whyte working like trojans in the middle of the park. Conor O’Brien and Jack Lowry extended the Tinryland lead and when David Townsend rattled the Ballinabranna net in the 25th minute Tinryland led by 2-5 to 1-2. Three minutes before the break Diarmuid Walshe found the Ballinabranna net once again to leave the half time score 3-5 to 1-2 in favour of the men in blue and white.

When the 2nd half began Tinryland continued to press and a Garry Fields point in the 31st minute was followed by Diarmuid’s  3rd goal to put the issue beyond doubt. The remainder of the game saw Tinryland introduce Paddy Brown, John Kelly, Barry Kennedy and Greg Murphy and the fresh legs helped to maintain the momentum. A succession of Tinryland points from Richard Whyte, David Townsend, Garry Fields, Matthew O’Toole and Dean Farrell left Tinryland ahead by 4-11 to 1-4 before Ballinabranna got a consolation goal and a point with 5 minutes remaining. The game ended on a high for the home side when David Townsend lobbed the Ballinabranna goalkeeper for his second goal and Jack Lowry and Mark Dempsey both capped fine performances with points before stand in referee Martin Murphy sounded the final whistle.
