Tinryland made a whirlwind start to this 2nd round S.F.L. division 1 game in Rathcrogue on Sunday scoring 6 unanswered points in the opening 6 minutes. The Tinryland forwards were on fire at this stage with the Walshe brothers Diarmaid and Cormac in the full forward line receiving plentiful supply of ball from their midfielders Keith Jackson and Peter Hennessy. Full forward Diarmaid Walshe scored 4 points in this period and with another 2 white flags being raised by Matthew O’Toole and Jackson Tinryland appeared to be running away with the points. Rathvilly steadily came to grips with the game and in the 11th minute corner forward Conor Owens rattled the Tinryland net to give the Wicklow border side a lifeline. Tinryland responded with a Cormac Walshe point but the Tinryland defence was undone again in the 15th minute when Rathvilly wing back Colin Byrne raced through to slot the ball past Tinryland goalkeeper Ciaran Byrne. This score proved to be Rathvilly’s last of the opening half and the home side added 3 further points via Peter Hennessy, Keith Jackson and Cormac Walshe to leave the blue and white hoops 4 points ahead at the break. Half time score Tinryland 0-10, Rathvilly 2-0.

Rathvilly came out in the 2nd half determined to bridge the gap and within 2 minutes of the restart Conor Owens and Brendan Murphy reduced the margin to 2 points with well taken scores.

Tinryland then pressed forward and a Cormac Walshe goal in the 34th minute game them breathing space. Two minutes later Tinryland had an opportunity to consolidate their advantage when Padraig Townsend was felled in the small square but Diarmaid Walshe could only manage a point from the resulting penalty. Conor McGrath for Tinryland and Brian Smith for Rathvilly then traded points before Smith tagged on 3 further points for the away team leaving 3 points separating the sides with 10 minutes remaining. Tinryland lifted the siege with 2 further points from the Walshe brothers but with 5 minutes remaining Rathvilly got another lifeline when Danny Molloy successfully converted a penalty to leave only 2 points separating the teams once again. Rathvilly drove forward in search of further scores but their momentum was stemmed by a bout of handbags resulting in a host of yellow cards for players from both sides. The final act of this entertaining game saw Diarmaid Walshe successfully convert a 35 metre free and the home side remain unbeaten having accounted for last years Co. finallists Palatine and Rathvilly in the 2 opening games of this years league.
