Tinryland Seniors maintain winning streak with great victory over Rathvilly

By Eamonn Byrne

Tinryland senior footballers made it six wins out of seven in the Carlow S.F.L. division 1 with a brilliant 8 point win over Rathvilly in Rathcrogue on Saturday 26th May. The strength of the panel was shown in a positive light in this game as Tinryland were forced to call in a good number of young players due to regulars missing because of Co. team duty, injuries and suspensions. The boys in blue and white opened the scoring within one minute of the throw in when Alan Barrett pointed and when Paul Broderick scored a brilliant point 60 seconds later it was clear that the lads were up for it once again. Rathvilly opened their account with a point in the 4th minute but two further Broderick points and another from Alan Barrett left the home side leading by 5 points to 1 by the 12th minute. Rathvilly then enjoyed a productive spell scoring points in the 17th and 18th minutes but with John Dwyer and Glen Doyle doing well at midfield Paul Broderick scored a goal out of the top drawer following a great catch by Dwyer. Broderick was really on song now and he scored another spectacular point in the 23rd minute to put Tinryland six points ahead before Rathvilly rallied with two points before the interval that left the scoreboard reading Tinrylan 1-6 Rathvilly 0-5.

The second half was only 2 minutes old when Cian Lawlor who had a tremendous game throughout pointed and the icing was really being put on the cake by the 35th minute when Padraig Whelan rattled the Rathvilly net following great work by himself and Evan Doyle. Further points from Broderick in the 42nd and 44th minutes left the scoreline reading 2-9 to 0-5 in Tinrylands favour and despite another Rathvilly point in the 45th minute Tinryland maintained their advantage with another Padraig Whelan point following good work by Cian Lawlor. Tinryland then received a set back when Richard Whyte was 2nd yellow carded but like the Old Leighlin game two weeks previously Tinryland upped the ante and it looked at times as if we had the extra man. At this stage the backs marshalled by Danny Moran in goal and held together by superb performances from  John Paul Moore, Shane O’Neill, Peter Doran, Padraig Delaney , Cian Lawlor and Niall Barrett hoovered up everything thrown at them. Rathvilly were held to only 2 points during this period and Tinryland ran out comfortable winners in the end on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-8. Tinryland can be proud of this display with players like Padraig Townsend, Paul Broderick, John Dwyer, Cian Lawlor Padraig Whelan giving every bead of sweat for the cause and a further bonus was the introduction of young subs Kevin Barrett, Diarmuid Walshe, Ciaran Townsend and Jack Lowry who got further experience of senior football and did well in the process. Tinryland are now in a semi final position in the league with 4 games left and two further wins will guarantee that spot. The team will be back in action on Sunday next 3rd June away to Kilbride at 7 p.m. followed by games against St Andrews (Home), Myshall and O’Hanrahans away.

Team: Danny Moran, Peadar Doran, John Paul Moore, Padraig Delaney, Cian Lawlor 0-1, Shane O’Neill, Niall Barrett, Glen Doyle, John Dwyer, Padraig Whelan 1-1, Richard Whyte, Padraig Townsend, Paul Broderick 1-6, Evan Doyle, Alan Barrett 0-2.
