Tinryland’s wait for a Carlow S.F.L. division 1 title will extend to a half century following this one point loss to Co. champions Palatine in the semi-final at Netwatch Cullen park on Friday last 9th June.

The early stages of this game were dominated by Tinryland as they pressed their neighbours at every chance building up a 5 point lead by the 12th minute. The early exchanges saw Co. players Paul Broderick (free) and Shane O’Neill trade points before Broderick added to his tally in the 7th and 8th minutes to extend the blue and white advantage to 2 points. It was all rosy in the garden at this stage and a Cormac Walshe goal in the 12th minute extended the advantage to 5 points before Palatine at last woke up from their slumbers with points from Jason Kane and former Tinryland player Stephen O’Reilly in a 60 second spell mid- way through the opening half.

The second half of the first 30 minutes saw Palatine consolidate their recovery and they added on 4 points without reply with a hat trick of points from veteran Brian Kelly and a successful free from Shane O’Neill to leave the half time score Palatine 0-7 Tinryland 1-3.

Two minutes after the re-start Tinryland achieved parity when lively corner forward James McGrath slotted over a point and the boys in hoops were back ahead by the 36th minute when Conor McGrath slotted over a good point. Palatine replied with a Darragh Moran point seconds later and the tide seemed to be turning in Tinryland’s direction in the 43rd minute when Pal. full forward Lee Gordon received a straight red following an altercation with Conor McGrath. Tinryland failed to capitalize with the extra man however and 7 minutes later Tinryland were reduced to 14 players when half time substitute John Murphy received a second yellow when trying to prevent a certain Palatine goal which was subsequently well saved by Trevor O’Reilly. Palatine then scored a point via wing forward Shane O’Neill which was cancelled out by a well worked Shane Redmond point in the 51st minute. Jason Kane then put his side back in front before James McGrath registered a point for Tinryland. Palatine edged ahead again when Darragh Moran raised a white flag as the clock ticked past the 60 minutes. Tinryland went in search of the equaliser in stoppage time and looked to have a great chance of the winner when Niall Lowry passed to Glen Doyle but the recently introduced subs attempt at a dramatic match winning goal was smothered by the Pal. defence and goalkeeper Craig Kearney. Seconds later referee John Hickey sounded the full time whistle as Palatine advanced to the 2017 league final. These sides will meet again in the first round of the Carlow S.F.C. at the end of July and both sides will now go back to the drawing board to prepare for what should be a tremendous local derby. Final score Palatine 0-11 Tinryland 1-7.
