Tinryland Juniors reach knockout stages in Division 3 with impressive win against Palatine

Tinryland junior footballers put up their best performance of the season to date in Bennekerry on Tuesday 23rd May when they defeated neighbours Palatine to reach the division 3 semi-final.

The men in blue and white were never headed in this local derby played in ideal conditions on a balmy late May evening.  Tinryland got off to a good start scoring 2 early points from centre forward Mark Dempsey and Padraig Whelan who converted a free after a foul on the lively David Townsend. Palatine responded in the 7th minute with a point from midfielder Adam Duggan but 60 seconds later David Townsend stretched the Tinryland lead back out to 2 points following good play by Padraic Whelan. Tinryland were guilty of sloppy play for a period and gave away easy ball resulting in 2 Palatine points from corner forward Conor Clonan and veteran Eoin McMahon. Tinryland’s response was swift and the excellent Dean Farrell rattled the Palatine net in the 10th minute with a superb individual goal following good play by Conor Ryan and Padraic Whelan. Eoin McMahon converted another free for the Cnoc Arda men before David Townsend responded with a great point following excellent play by Ciaran Larkin, Padraig Delaney and Peter Hennessy. Tinryland had an opportunity to increase their advantage but Padraic Whelan was wide with a free won by Mark Dempsey. Good play by Joey Ryan and Peter Hennessy resulted in another David Townsend point in the 15th minute. Paul Doyle made it a 5 point game 2 minutes later with another Tinjryland point before Pakie O’Toole for Pal and Mark Dempsey for Tinryland exchanged points, the latter score following great play by the excellent Shane O’Neill and Dylan Byrne. Palatine enjoyed the majority of the exchanges in the latter end of the opening half scoring 3 quick points via Eoin McMahon (2) and centre back Aidan Murphy after another negative turnover by Tinryland. Half time score Tinryland 1-7 Palatine 0-8.

The second half began with a Palatine point from midfielder Chris O’Brien in the 33rd minute before a class  point from Michael Dobosz stretched the Tinryland advantage  back out to 2 points once again.

A Palatine point from full forward Pakie O’Toole was matched by a Tinryland one from a free by Padraic Whelan and Tinryland extended their lead by the 45th minute following further points from Whelan and Mark Dempsey. Palatine introduced sub David Murphy into the action shortly after John Reid had reduced the Tinryland lead to 3 points with 10 minutes remaining. Tinryland rang the changes at this stage also bringing on veteran Niall Barrett and the returning Andrew Hanley. 

The stage looked set for a very exciting finish when Palatine wing forward Eoion McMahon pointed with 7 minutes remaining but Tinryland responded in a very positive way scoring brilliant points from Michael Dobosz, Padraic Whelan (free) and 2 From Dean Farrell who capped a great performance to put Tinryland into a semi-final where the likely opponent will be Fenagh. Final score Tinryland 1-15 Palatine 0-12 Outstanding for Tinryland were Conor Ryan, Shane O’Neill, Padraic Whelan, Peter Hennessy, Dean Farrell, David Townsend, Mark Dempsey and Michael Dobosz. Palatine were best served by Aidan Murphy, John Reid, Eoin McMahon, Pakie O’Toole and Adam Duggan.
