Tinryland Junior A team made it 4 wins from 4 games played in the Carlow S.F.L. division 4 when they had ten points to spare over Old Leighlin at Molaise park in Old Leighlin on Sunday 4th May.

Despite missing a few regulars the Tinryland lads had a fairly comfortable time after they overcame the concession of an early Old Leighlin goal from a free kick by their corner forward Paddy Deevy in the 3rd minute. That goal which crept in past the entire defence and stand in goalie Owan O’Gorman was the catalyst for the division 4 league leaders to knuckle down and keep the scoreboard ticking. John Jackson opened the Tinryland account in the 4th minute after sustained Tinryland pressure and the tally was doubled one minute later when wing forward Padraic Whelan sent over a point that could easily have ended up in Old Leighlin goalkeeper Eamonn Tobin’s net. Next it was the turn of the much improved Alan Kirwan to slot over the equaliser following great work from player manager Niall Barrett and by the 8th minute Tinryland led for the first time when hard working mid fielder Patrick Townsend pointed after a pass from a 45 by Padraic Whelan.

A brilliant move in the 9th minute involving Greg Murphy, Shane Delaney and Padraic Whelan resulted in another Patrick Townsend point before the home side reduced the margin to the minimum with a Sean Carpenter point. Tinryland then settled down to play some of their best football and two quick points from David Townsend after more good play from Alan Kirwan was the prelude for an Alan Kirwan goal following good play from Gary Scully, Kevin Barrett and Chris Townsend.

Gary Scullys point in the 22nd minute was another gem following a combination of passes involving Tinryland’s best player Shane O’Neill, Padraig Delaney, Eddie Dowling, Shane Delaney, Alan Kirwan and Padraic Whelan. Old Leighlin then enjoyed their best spell in the run up to half time scoring a goal from full forward David O’Leary and a point from Paddy Deevy which left only 3 points separating the sides. The first half finished on a good note for Tinryland however and Niall Barrett and Chris Townsend both scored goals just before the half time whistle sounded to leave us leading by 3-8 to 2-2 at half time.

Shane O’Neill quickly extended our advantage within two minutes of the restart before David Townsend put Tinryland in cruise control in the 33rd minute following more good play from O’Neill and Gary Scully. Old Leighlin then managed their 3rd goal which prompted a mini rally which yielded two further points from David Dowling and Paddy Deevy before Tinryland finished with a flourish with another Chris Townsend point and a point from the penalty spot from the returning Gary Fields.

Tinryland who had ten different scorers on the night also introduced Stephen O’Sullivan and Jeff Abbott into the action in the 2nd half. Final score Tinryland 4-12 Old Leighlin 3-5.  Next up for Tinryland will be Mount Leinster Rangers at home on Sunday next 11th May at 6 p.m.
