Tinryland Junior (A) team crowned a magnificent league campaign by winning the Carlow S.F.L. division 4 title against Kildavin-Clonegal at Dr. Cullen Park on Tuesday 24th June.
The men in blue and white hoops who had scored 39 goals and 94 points in their previous 8 league games were made fight all the way to the end by a gritty Wexford border side who never gave up at any stage. Kildavin-Clonegal got off to the best possible start after only 50 seconds when corner forward Ronan Brennan slotted home their opening goal. Tinryland had to wait until the 8th minute to open their account when Alan Barrett pointed after David Townsend’s free rebounded off the Kildavin post. At this stage Kildavin-Clonegal were testing Tinryland but the defence made a number of important interceptions which kept the Kildavin men at bay. Points from Chris Townsend in the 11th minute and by Alan Barrett 3 minutes later saw Tinryland all square mid- way through the opening half with another point from Alan giving Tinryland a short lived lead before Eoin Roberts levelled matters once again. Kildavin-Clonegal then took the lead once again in the 18th minute when wing back Michael Kirwin pointed before Alan Barrett was narrowly wide with a gilt edged goal chance. The sides were tied once again by the 22nd minute when Chris Townsend successfully converted a free and the first half ended on a good note for Tinryland when Chris repeated the dose from a free won by lively wing forward Dean Farrell. Half time score Tinryland 0-6 Kildavin-Clonegal 1-2.
The second half began with Kildavin-Clonegals Padraig Byrne receiving a black card and he was replaced by Keith Coleman. Tinryland introduced Stephen O’Sullivan and Evan Doyle into the action in the early stages of the 2nd half and Evan made an immediate impact when he converted a free won by Alan Barrett. Ronan Brennan then narrowed the gap with a point with 15 minutes remaining as John Paul Moore was introduced into the fray. Another successful free from Evan Doyle in the 51st minute stretched Tinryland’s lead to 2 points and the title looked to be heading Tinryland’s way 60 seconds later when Evan Doyle crashed the ball to the Kildavin-Clonegal net following good play by the Barrett brothers Niall and Alan. Kildavin-Clonegal refused to yield however and a point with 4 minutes remaining kept Tinryland honest leaving only 4 points separating the teams. With play entering stoppage time Tinryland got another wake- up call when Kildavin sub Ian St Ledger found the net but the men in hoops responded in the best possible fashion straight from the kick out when David Townsend capped a fine performance by rattling the net at the other end. Referee John Thompson then sounded the final whistle and Tinryland  captain Padraig Delaney lifted the Division 4 trophy to the delight of the large crowd of  Tinryland supporters. Tinryland will now look forward to the Junior (b) championship which begins in early August with the first game against Kildavin-Clonegal followed by further championship games with O’Hanrahans and St. Andrews. The Junior (B) team will open their championship campaign on Sunday next 29th June against Naomh Eoin at 6 p.m. in Hogan Park Fenagh. Full time score Tinryland 2-8  Kildavin-Clonegal 2-4.
