Tinryland Junior A team made the best possible start to their Div. 4 campaign with a very convincing win over Kildavin-Clonegal in Rathcrogue on Sunday 13th April. Goals were the order of the day in this clash and at the end of 60 minutes Tinryland had put 7 past Kildavin-Clonegal goalkeeper Damien Treacy who also made a number of excellent saves throughout the hour. Despite playing against a strong breeze Tinryland led by 2-2 to 0-3 mid way through the opening half with the goals coming from Darren Murphy in the 2nd minute and David Townsend after 14 minutes. The 3rd Tinryland goal arrived after 25 minutes courtesy of Alan Barrett who entered the fray in the 15th minute having been held up by a puncture on his way to the venue. The Tinryland points in that opening half were scored by Niall Barrett in the 5th minute, Jack Lowry 16th minute and Chris Townsend 18 minutes. Kildavin-Clonegal were relying on their full forward Ken Brennan and corner forward Ian St. Ledger to keep the scoreboard ticking. Half time score Tinryland 3-3  Kildavin-Clonegal 0-4

The second half began with a point from a free for Kildavin-Clonegal. This was matched within 60 seconds by a Chris Townsend point after a great run from Dean Farrell. Dean was very unlucky in the 40th minute when his rasping shot was brilliantly saved by K.C. goalkeeper Treacy. Tinryland’s 4th goal then arrived and was the product of the best move of the match with Kuba Dobosz, Alan Barrett and goal scorer Chris Townsend all involved. Tinryland were then dealt a blow when Jack Lowry received a straight red card but undeterred Tinryland quickly responded with another goal from Chris Townsend who ended with a personal tally of 3-2 following good work from David Townsend Jeff Abbott and Alan Barrett. Despite their numerical disadvantage Tinryland went in search of another goal and they were rewarded in the 51st minute with another Chris Townsend special following more good play by David Townsend and Alan Barrett. Kildavin-Clonegal responded with a consolation goal from their centre forward with 9 minutes remaining but they were punch drunk at this stage and the icing on the cake came when Alan Barrett slotted home our 7th goal with 5 minutes remaining. Final score Tinryland 7-5 Kildavin Clonegal 1-6. The Junior A team will be back in action on Sunday next 20th April away to St. Andrews in McGrath park Bagenalstown at 6 p.m. This match will be confirmed by the team management during the coming week as St Andrews may not be fielding a team this season.
