Tinryland and Kildavin-Clonegal draw in Carlow S.F.L. Division 3 Final

By Eamonn Byrne

Tinryland junior A team had to settle for a draw with Kildavin-Clonegal in the Carlow S.F.L. Div. 3 final played at Dr. Cullen park on Tuesday evening 10th July. This was a game that the blue and white hoops could have and should have won as they enjoyed a four point lead with 9 minutes remaining against the Wexford border side who were reduced to 14 players for the majority of the second half.

Tinryland enjoyed a lot of possession in the opening half but a combination of poor shooting meant that Kildavin held the upperhand on the scoreboard as they made much better use of their possession. Kildavin-Clonegal opened the scoring after 2 minutes when corner forward Paul Nolan converted a free and it was the 11th minute before Tinryland got on the score sheet when Garry Fields raised a white flag. Paul Nolan for KC and David Townsend for Tinryland then traded points before the latter gave Tinryland the lead for the first time in the 16th minute following good work by Brian Farrell. The Tinryland lead was short lived however and 4 successive Kildavin points from Dan Murphy, Paul Nolan (2) and Ronan Brennan between the 17th and 23rd minutes left Tinryland 3 points in arrears. Cathal O’Toole then stemmed the flow when he pointed after 24 minutes before Kildavin-Clonegal put significent daylight between the sides with a well worked goal 4 minutes before the interval. Tinryland finally began to wake up from their slumbers and two points from Cathal O’Toole and his brother Matthew left only 3 points separating the sides when referee Seamie Doyle sounded the half time whistle. The half time score read Kildavin-Clonegal 1-6 Tinryland 0-6

A strong team talk from the Tinryland management at half time seemed to work the oracle as Tinryland finally got their act together. Alan Barrett opened our 2nd half account in the 38th minute with a point and 3 minutes later David Townsend pointed after a great movement involving Conor O’Brien, and Brian Farrell. In the 42nd minute Tinryland were back in the lead after a great goal by full forward Kevin Barrett and when his brother Alan pointed a free with 16 minutes left it looked like Tinryland were destined for victory as Kildavin centre forward Ronan Brennan was sent off after receiving a second yellow for a strong challenge on Tinryland’s best player Conor O’Brien. With 10 minutes remaining Paul Nolan reduced the Tinryland lead to the minimum but Tinryland were then awarded a penalty when Kevin barrett was up ended in the small square and Alan Barrett calmly stroked the ball to the net to give us what looked like a winning lead.

This score however proved to be Tinryland’s last and it was Kildavin-Clonegal that finished with a flourish scoring 4 unanswered points in the closing stages as Tinryland despite having the extra man ran out of steam.

When referee Seamie Doyle sounded the long whistle the final scoreline read Tinryland 2-9 Kildavin-Clonegal 1-12. The replay date is still to be confirmed .
