Palatine U16 footballers proved too strong for a gallant Tinryland outfit in the Carlow u16 Div. 2 final played at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday morning 3rd October. The Cnoc Arda boys powered by 3 outstanding players in Cathal O’Neill, Andrew Kehoe and Robert Crowley won this game in the first half by outscoring the boys in blue and white by 3-6 to 0-2 despite Tinryland enjoying the bulk of the play in the opening exchanges when 3 clear cut goal chances were squandered.  Keelan Gaffney opened the Tinryland account with a great point in the 12th minute from a ’45 and the only other Tinryland score in the first half came in the dying seconds when centre forward Conor Brennan converted a free. Palatine scored 3 crucial goals from O’Neill (2) and Kehoe in the 17th, 23rd and 29th minutes to leave the half time scoreboard reading Palatine 3-6 Tinryland 0-2.

With the breeze behind them Tinryland began the 2nd half in a much more positive mode and within 3 minutes of the restart Mark Walshe and Conor Brennan had added 2 quick points. It got even better for the Tinryland boys in the 35th minute when Tinryland were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Ronan Curran to reduce the margin to 8 points with 25 minutes remaining. After Andrew Kehoe had opened the Pal 2nd half account Tinryland scored another goal via Conor Brennan which was quickly followed by a Keelan Gaffney point to leave only 4 points separating the sides and all to play for. At the other end Palatine then won a penalty which was duly converted by O’Neill and over the next 10 minutes the same player converted 4 consecutive frees as the Pal boys applied the pressure once again. The Pal scoring was completed in the 56th minute when centre back Robert Crowley slotted over another point before Tinryland finished with a mini flourish scoring a goal from Ronan Curran and a pair of points from their best player Keelan Gaffney and Conor Brennan.
