A goal separated Tinryland and O’Hanrahans at the end of this entertaining Carlow J.F.C. B semi final played in the Palatine G.A.A. grounds in Bennekerry on Wednesday 4th September. This was a game that Tinryland could have won but extremely slow starts in each half combined with losing a player to a second yellow card proved to be our downfall in the end. The O’Hanrahans began the game looking like they would run Tinryland off the park. The town team raced into a three point lead by the 14th minute and when they scored their first goal in the 15th minute Tinryland’s prospects looked slim to say the least. Padraig Whelan playing his first game in over a year eventually opened the Tinryland account when he converted a free in the 17th minute and with the team all playing better the Blues were held scoreless for the remainder of the half. Another Padraig Whelan point following good work from Jack Lowry and Mick Delaney reduced the margin further and when John Jackson crashed home a goal in the 29th minute Tinryland’s tails were up. On the stroke of half time Barry Kennedy levelled matters to leave the half time score Tinryland 1-3 O’Hanrahans 1-3. With the advantage of the breeze in the second half many fancied Tinryland to kick on an win the match comfortably but unfortunately that is not what happened. Tinryland did start brightly and a Padraig Whelan point 50 seconds after the restart put Tinryland in front for the first time. This lead was short lived however and a Blues point from Eddie brady in the 32nd minute was the cue for the Dublin road team to up the ante once again. Between the 36th and 55th minutes O’Hanrahans scored 4 points without reply and they could have had a goal in the 42nd minute only for a great penalty save by David O’Neill. During this period also Tinryland lost Barry Kennedy to a second yellow card. Similar to the first half Tinryland despite their numerical disadvantage suddenly woke from their slumbers as the Blues tired and a Jack Lowry point in the 57th minute was followed by another from Mark lawlor to leave just one goal separating the sides. The Blues then decided to run down the clock and Tinryland were not able to penetrate their defence anymore and the game ended with David O’Neill making another great save to leave the final score O’Hanrahans 1-9 Tinryland 1-6. Similar to 2012 the Junior B team aquitted themselves well in the championship after failing to field in the league. This is a grade that Tinryland could be successful in if the players put in any sort of preparation. Hopefully the team will realise this for 2014 and bring some silverware back to the club.

Outstanding for Tinryland were goalkeeper David O’Neill defenders Paddy Browne, Kuba Debosz, and Jack Lowry together with Adam Murphy who gave a wonderful exhibition of high fielding at mid field and forwards Padraig Whelan,  John Jackson.

and sub Mark Lawlor.
