Old Leighlin mid-fielder David Dowling was the hero of the hour in the opening round of the Talbot Hotel J.F.C. Group 1 at the training centre on Tuesday 8th August. His last minute goal when his team trailed by 2 points denied a gallant Tinryland team a victory that should have been achieved having led by 4 points going into the closing stages.  Tinryland began the game on a bright note after Old Leighlin full forward John Ryan and corner forward Paddy Deevy had scored the opening 2 points for the men from Molaise Park in the 3rd and 4th minutes. Tinryland replied with a Paul Doyle goal in the 5th minute before Deevy for Old leighlin and Dean Farrell traded points by the 9th minute. Tinryland had numerous chances to consolidate their advantage for the remainder of the half but a succession of wides from Adam Dunne, Paul Doyle, Padraig Whelan, Ciaran Townsend and David Townsend meant that no more scores were registered before referee Brian Deering sounded the half time whistle. Meanwhile Old Leighlin were more economical with their scoring chances in that first half and they added on 3 further points before half time via the  lively Paddy Deevy (2) and John Ryan. Half Time score Old Leighlin 0-6 Tinryland 1-1.

After a stern team talk from the Tinryland mentors the 2nd period produced a much better performance from the men in blue and white hoops. Early wides from Paul Doyle and David Townsend were followed by points from Doyle and wing forward Padraig Whelan  and with the performance levels rising for the men in blue and white 3 quick points from Jack Lowry, Mark Morrissey and David Townsend edged Tinryland further ahead entering the final quarter. During this period Tinryland should have been even further ahead as the wide count continued to grow but when Shane O’Neill pointed in the 56th minute Tinryland began to scent a victory that looked unlikely earlier on in the game. David Townsend and Shane O’Neill looked to have sealed a victory with quick points entering the final 5 minutes but Old Leighlin were nothing but dogged and they finished with a flourish scoring points via Paddy Deevy and Michael Meaney (Black Bog) before Dowling’s late late strike sent the Old Leighlin supporters into delirium as they plucked a victory from the jaws of defeat. The Tinryland players and supporters were left to rue their missed chances when the game was there for the taking and its now back to the drawing board for the next round of the competition against Leighlinbridge on Tuesday next 15th August. Final Score Old Leighlin 1-9 Tinryland 1-8.
