Tinryland junior footballers were brought back down to earth on Friday 26th September when St Andrew’s reversed the result of the group game played only 16 days earlier to the tune of 26 points in the semi- final played under lights at the Fenagh training centre. St Andrew’s reversal of fortunes was in no small part due to the 5 changes they made to their team with Liam Cummins, Andrew Casey, Thomas Maher, Nathan Byrne and Mathew Cormac on the starting 15.

In the game a little over two weeks earlier Tinryland had the spoils wrapped up as early as the 16th minute when 3 early goals helped the men in blue and white to a 3-6 to 0-1 lead.

St Andrews gave Tinryland a dose of their own medicine on Friday scoring 3 goals in the opening quarter and limiting Tinryland to 3 points in that period. The St. Andrew’s improvement in the space of 2 weeks was based on a lightning fast start and dominance in most sectors. The Clarke brothers Shane and Jamie were the chief tormentors of Tinryland and between them they had scored 1-2 in the opening 8 minutes before Tinryland got on the scoreboard with an Alan Barrett point in the 9th minute. Tinryland managed two more points in the opening quarter but St Andrews virtually wrapped up the game with 2 more goals from full forward Dessie Dowling and wing forward Darren Crooks to lead by 3-5 to 0-3 by the 16th minute.

Good work by Dean Farrell and Alan Barrett set Chris Townsend up for Tinryland’s opening goal in the 18th minute but it was St Andrew’s who continued to impress scoring another goal via corner forward Andrew Kane and further points from Shane and Jamie Clarke before the half time whistle which left the scoreboard reading 4-7 to 1-4 in the Bagenalstown team’s favour.

When play resumed it was Tinryland who looked totally transformed in the opening exchanges scoring 1-2 without reply within 4 minutes of the restart. Great points from David Townsend and Alan Barrett were the curtain raisers to a brilliantly worked David Townsend goal in the 34th minute following good work by sub Gary Fields and Alan Barrett. Tinryland supporters in the sizeable attendance were probably hoping that a miracle was taking place at this stage but St Andrew’s composed themselves once again scoring a goal via Darren Crooks and further points via former European U20 1500m medallist Danny Darcy and Jamie Clarke to stretch their advantage to 15 points with 5 minutes remaining. During that 20 minute spell Tinryland could only muster one more point from Gary Fields as St. Andrew’s battened down the hatches to ensure their place in the final against either Eire Og or Askea.

Tinryland finished the match with a goal from David Townsend who scored 2-2 in total and an Alan Barrett point to leave the final score St. Andrew’s 5-13 Tinryland 3-8.
