J.F.C. A Group 1

Leighlinbridge 4-10 Tinryland 0-13

Leighlinbridge progressed as group winners in this top of the table clash against the hosts at sun-kissed Rathcrogue on Sunday 20th September.

The old adage that goals win matches was never as true as the All Blacks found the net on 4 occassions to run out comfortable winners in the end.

The first major arrived as early as the 5th minute when Shane Farrell took advantage of a Tinryland defensive mix up and by the 25th minute the eventual winners were five points ahead after some well taken points scored by Aidan Lillis (2), Jason Daly and Shane Farrell. Tinryland ended the opening half well with the lively Mark Lawlor (2), Dinny Farrell and Padraig Whelan narrowing the margin to 3 points by the half time whistle.

After 10 minutes of the 2nd half the Leighlinbridge advantage was still 3 points but that advantage then doubled when Aidan Lillis converted his 3rd penalty of the season to give the home side a mountain to climb.

To their credit Tinryland kept plugging away but they were hit with another major when one of their defenders deflected the ball into his own net. The men in blue and white reduced the margin to 6 points once again with points from Ciaran Larkin, Evan Doyle and Mark Lawlor but a P. J. Haughney goal in the closing stages put the icing on the cake and the men from Ballinaboley deservedly progressed straight to a semi- final spot with Tinryland moving into the quarter final.
