Tinryland junior A squad landed the first silverware of 2012 for our club when they captured the Carlow S.F.L. Div 3 title in an exciting and entertaining replay with Kildavin-Clonegal at Dr Cullen park on Wednesday 7th August. When these two evenly matched teams met 3 weeks ago the game could have gone either way and it was a similar story in this replay before Tinryland’s superior fitness told in the closing stages. In an evenly matched first half Tinryland opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when Garry Fields slotted over a point from a free but this was matched 60 seconds later when KC wing forward Richie O’Leary raised a white flag. Matthew O’Toole then pointed another free for Tinryland before Kildavin corner forward Paul Nolan levelled matters once again in the 8th minute. Kildavin Clonegal edged ahead once again in the 11th minute before Matthew O’Toole who was having a great game pointed following great work by Conor O’Brien, David Townsend and Brian Farrell. Another Kildavin-Clonegal point from full forward Thomas Doyle was matched by another O’Toole beauty in the 16th minute after a great passing movement involving himself, Ciaran Townsend and P.J Murphy who showed all his experience in this game. An injury to Jack Lowry saw Brian Mullen being introduced but by the 22nd minute the Wexford border team had stretched two points clear following points from Paul Nolan and Thomas Doyle. Tinrylands energetic corner forward Garry Fields then won a free and Matthew O’Toole duly converted before Ciaran Townsend tied up matters on the stroke of half time to leave the interval score Tinryland 0-6 Kildavin-Clonegal 0-6.

Tinryland introduced Fiach Byrne into the fray at half time and over the opening minutes of the second half Tinryland looked to be gaining control. We had a great chance to edge ahead in the 34th minute when David Townsend was fouled but Matthew was unlucky on this occasion with his free. Between the 34th and 44th minutes Kildavin-Clonegal started to turn the screw and during this period of play they stretched into a 3 point lead following points from Paul Nolan and the energetic Dan Murphy who landed two.

Matthew O’Toole then landed another beauty for Tinryland before Tinryland goalkeeper Colm Nolan deflected a rasper which was heading for the net over the bar. With KC now leading by 3 points with 8 minutes remaining It looked like this game was beginning to slip away but within 2 minutes a great passing movement involving sub Christoph Chall and Ciaran Townsend saw wily veteran P.J. Murphy crash home the equalising goal and when Garry Fields pointed a free 60 seconds later Tinryland were suddenly in the lead for the first time since the 7th minute of the first half. It was all Tinryland now and victory looked to be assured when Ciaran Townsend assisted by sub Barry Power rattled the Kildavin net once again with Kevin Barrett scoring what looked like the insurance point in the 58th minute following great work by David O’Shea , P J Murphy and Conor O’Brien. Games are never won until the final whistle however and Tinryland supporters had to endure a nervous last 3 minutes when Kildavin scored a goal to leave only 2 points separating the sides. Kildavin-Clonegal attacked in packs in search of the winning goal but a heroic defence held out and Patrick Townsend who was excellent throughout was soon lifting the Div 3 trophy  up in the Lennon stand sparking great celebrations among the large Tinryland support. There were many heroes for Tinryland in this final but among those who performed magnificently were captain fantastic Patrick Townsend, Brian Farrell, P.J. Murphy Matthew O’Toole, Dean Farrell Kevin Barrett and Garry Fields. Goalkeeper Colm Nolan played a cruical role with his pin point kick outs and his brilliant save with 10 minutes remaining while Eddie Dowling and Conor O’Brien were excellent defenders throughout. Jack Lowry until injured together with the excellent David O;Shea and Greg Murphy also played a crucial role while Ciaran Townsend was involved in many attacks being well supported by David Townsend and the energetic substitutes Brian Mullen, Fiach Byrne Christoph Chall and Barry Power who all played a big role and offered fresh legs when the opposition began to tire. Well done also to the backroom team of Mick Murphy, Brian Doyle, Nicky Ryan and Alan Doyle for all their efforts together with the magnificent Tinryland supporters who turned out in large numbers to support the lads.
