Junior (A) Football Quarter Final

Tinryland 1-11 Rathvilly 0-9

Tinryland qualified for the semi-final of the JFC (A) with a 5 point win over Rathvilly at Bro. Leo Park on Saturday afternoon 26th September.

Despite the winning margin the men in blue and white hoops could never relax against the Wicklow border side who finished the game with 12 players. In a physical 2nd half Rathvilly players received 2 red and one black card.

Padraic Whelan opened Tinryland’s account when he converted a free after 60 seconds. This score was cancelled out by a Gary Owens point for Rathvilly in the 5th minute. Mark Lawlor restored the Tinryland lead in the 6th minute after good play by Whelan but Rathvilly responded once again with a successful J.J. Smith free. An excellent Peter Hennessy point and another from Padraic Whelan were followed by a Rathvilly point from ex Tinryland underage player Shane Keogh to leave the minimum separating the sides before the first water break.

When play resumed Tinryland enjoyed their best spell with a Ronan Curran point and a brilliantly worked Padraic Whelan goal after great play by Peter Doran, Gregg Murphy, Mark Lawlor and Alan Barrett.

J J Smith kept Rathvilly in touch with 2 quick points before Alan Barrett closed the first half scoring with a 29th minute point after more good work by one of Tinryland’s outstanding players Mark Lawlor. Half Time score Tinryland 1-6 Rathvilly 0-5.

The 2nd half began well for Tinryland with Ronan Curran increasing the advantage to 5 points in the 33rd minute after good play by Dinny Farrell, Conor McGrath, Ciaran Larkin, Shane O’Neill and Joey Ryan. Rathvilly were then dealt their first blow when their wing back was dismissed. Mark Lawlor increased the Tinryland lead to six points before Rathvilly staged a mini revival with points in the 43rd and 45th minutes. Despite their numerical disadvantage Rathvilly still looked dangerous and it took a tremendous save from Tinryland goalkeeper Daniel Donegan to keep his team in the comfort zone. The selectors then introduced fresh legs with Cormac McElligott, Gavin Power and veterans Evan Doyle and Paul Doyle entering the fray. Rathvilly went down to 13 men when a player received a black card and with a lot of space opening up Tinryland tagged on two further points via Mark Lawlor before veteran former senior star J J Smith received his marching orders from referee John Hickey. The final score of the game was a successful Padraic Whelan free in the 58th minute to ensure Tinryland progress to next weekend’s semi- final. All Tinryland players completed a good shift on Saturday with outstanding performances from Daniel Donegan, Eoghan Hosey, Barry Power Peter Doran, Shane O’Neill, Padraic Whelan, Ronan Curran and Mark Lawlor. Next week-ends semi-final will be a step up for Tinryland and improvement will be needed all round in order to progress to the Junior (A) final.
