Tinryland minor footballers edged closer to the knockout stages of the championship with another comfortable victory over Rathvilly at Rathcrogue on Monday 19th August.

Despite the final scoreline the opening 20 minutes of this game was a competitive affair after Niall Lowry had opened the Tinryland account after only 26 seconds. This score was matched within  90 seconds when Glen Byrne pointed for the Wicklow border side. Rathvilly were then awarded a penalty in the 4th minute but true to form Tinryland goalie Ciaran Byrne made another of his trademark saves. Within 3 minutes Tinryland had the ball in the Rathvilly net when the alert Ciaran Townsend was on hand to finish a Dermot McGuill rebound.  Two further points from Niall Lowry  stretched the Tinryland advantage to 5 by the 10th minute before Rathvilly wing forward Aaron Broughall pointed to reduce the margin to 4 points. Tinryland were then dealt a blow when midfielder Kuba Debosz injured his knee. Tinryland  tagged on two further points via Andrew Hanly and Diarmaid Walshe as Conall O’Se was introduced for the injured Kuba Debosz.  Patrons at Rathcrogue were then treated to one of the best goals seen at the venue for a long time when Rathvilly corner back Ger Kavanagh sent a long range screamer to the Tinryland net which left the scoreboard reading Tinryland 1-5 Rathvilly 1-2 after 20 minutes. This was as good as it got for Rathvilly however and within 2 minutes Tinryland full forward Dermot McGuill scored a cracking goal following a great pass from Brian Hosey. The Rathvilly goalkeeper Darragh Donnelly had to pick the ball out of his net again within 60 seconds when Niall Lowry finished a pristine Ciaran Townsend delivery. Two fantastic points from Owen O’Gorman and Niall Lowry ended the first half scoring with the latter score the product of a great move involving Conor O’Toole, Brian Hosey and Dermot McGuill with the half ending as an excellent Conor O’Toole block kept Rathvilly at bay. Half time score Tinryland 3-7 Rathvilly 1-2.

Normal service resumed within 50 seconds of the restart when Diarmaid Walshe slotted over another point and when Andrew Hanley pointed after another minute the lead was stretched to 10 points. Good midfield play by Owen O’Gorman resulted in a Dermot McGuill point and another Diarmaid Walshe point after more good defending from “Redser” O’Toole left the scoreboard reading 3-12 to 1-2. Tinryland mentors then began to empty the bench with Luke Nolan and Marcus Lawler being introduced into the fray shortly followed by Barry Power and Michael Calvey. Rathvilly added on two points around this period from Aaron Broughall and Ger Kavanagh but the fitness of the Tinryland lads began to show and Rathvilly were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. Before the finish Tinryland had added another 1-5 to their tally with the goal coming from the penalty spot with 10 minutes remaining scored by Brian Mullen.

Further points from Ciaran Townsend (3), Owen O’Gorman and Diarmaid Walshe ended this game as a contest and ensured that Tinryland will be in the knockout stages with one league stage game remaining on Monday next away to St. Andrews. This will be a busy week for Tinryland with the U21 and senior teams in championship action on Wednesday 21st and Sunday 26th August respectively against St Andrews and Naomh Eoin.
